Vacuum Levitation Melting Technology

  Vacuum levitation melting technology uses the electromagnetic force to levitate the liquid metal pool or cause quasi-levitation, which adopts electromagnetic induction heating power supply and melts the material
under the vacuum or inert gas atmosphere.
  Levitation Melting is known as the most advanced melting technology in the world, its
advancement is reflected in two aspects: first, it eliminates the gas and crucible contamination to the
melt with vacuum technology, due to this characteristic, levitation melting technology has important
significance to produce and research the active metals and alloys, high purity and super pure metals
and alloys, as well as the complex alloys and intermetallic compound,etc; Second, it gets rid of the
limitation on melting temperature from crucible material——most ceramic crucibles are unable to
endure the high temperature above 2000 ℃. So the levitation melting technology has important
significance to research and develop refractory metals and alloys, compounds and ceramic material,
etc
  Levitation Melting Technology includes two kinds: Complete levitation melting technology and
Cold crucible induction melting technology.
Complete Levitation Melting Technology does not use crucible, the involved high frequency
power output of sensor consists of levitation coils and above stable rewind coils, and the liquid
metal pool is levitating in the coils during melting (Fig.1).Although the effect of complete levitation
melting is ideal, its melting capacity is a few grams which only applicable to small-scale laboratory
test.
  Cold crucible induction melting technology is developed on the basis of vacuum induction
melting, uses the segmented water-cooled cold copper crucible and supersonic frequency power, the
electromagnetic field passes through the cold crucible to produce the induced eddy current, the eddy
current heats and melts the metal charge, meanwhile, the eddy current interacts with magnetic line
of force so that produces the Lorentz force which supports and levitates the liquid metal pool or
causes the quasi-levitation. Fig.2 shows the core part of this technology. Fig.3 shows the hump
shaped levitation liquid metal pool in the cold crucible.

Using Cold Curcible Induction Melting for Functional Materials and Metal Single Crystal


Cold Crucible Induction Melting technology has significant importance to the development of Function materials and Metal single crystal. Below reviews the main developments in China.

  Since 1988,Bei Li started to produce the rare earth giant magnetostrictive alloy TbDyFe2 by cold crucible induction melting technology on the production scale, gained 2 authorized patents respectively in 2002 and 2005 [1,2]. In 2007, Zeng-Lin Zhou, et al [3] reported that they melted the A2B7 model La - Mg - Ni base hydrogen storage alloy by using the cold crucible induction melting technology. 

  Domestic development of Czochralski metal single crystal growth by using cold crucible induction Melting equipment includes: 
  In 1987,Da-Liang Sun,et al [4] for the first time in the world grew the large size Nd2Fe14B single crystal. 
  In 2000, Qiang Li,et al[5],grew the < 112 > oriented Φ 15 x 200 mm Tb0.27 Dy0.73 Fe2 single crystal. Guang-Heng Wu,et al[6] grew the < 111 > oriented Tb0.27 Dy0.73 Fe2 single crystal.
  About NiMnGa series Heusler alloy, Jing-Lan Chen,et al[7] grew the Ni52Mn24Ga24 single crystal in 2000. Liang Wu,et al[8] grew the [001] oriented Ni46Mn35Ga19 single crystal in 2009, and the increase rate of transformation strain for the magnetic enhancement reached 1.90%. 
  Regarding the β phrase Ni - Al high temperature shape memory alloy, Feng-Bing Song, et al[9] have done lots of researches on single crystal growth and composition control of Ni - Al alloy in 2001,etc.

Induction Cold Crucible LEVITATION Melting of Titanium

There are different melting methods for titanium, such like vacuum consumable electric arc melting(VAR),plasma melting(PAM),electron beam melting(EBM),electroslag remelting, etc. Compare with them, the Induction Cold Crucible Levitation Melting method developed by Shenzhen Summit Levitation Metallurgical S&T Co.,Ltd has the advantages as follows:
1)Conventionally the heating process started from the titanium charge surface, however the titanium charge be heated from inside by induced current during Cold Crucible Levitation Melting technology, meanwhile the strong electromagnetic stirring provide more precise and homogenous chemical and thermal melting


2)Use Segmented Water cooled copper crucible, the copper crucible and levitation avoid the crucible contamination. That is when the cold crucible, the induction coil, the frequency, and the power level are all properly designed and matched, the liquid metal pool are pushed inward away from the interior sidewalls of the crucible, in effect, the liquid metal pool be supported and levitated by the magnetic force.

What are Technology metal?

What are Technology metal?

Here can we say that the technology metals are those generally-rare metals that are essential for the production of 'high tech' devices and engineered systems, such as:
  • The mass production of miniaturized electronics and associated devices;
  • Advanced weapons systems and platforms for national defense;
  • The generation of electricity using 'alternative' sources such as solar panels and wind turbines;
  • The storage of electricity using cells and batteries.
There are of course numerous other uses and applications of these metals.


In the table below we list those metals that we define as ‘rare’, by defining rare as ‘produced annually in a quantity of 25,000 metric tonnes or less.’ Only the most obscure of these rare metals, such as the rare earths holmium, ytterbium, and lutetium, can still be defined as minor metals, because even today they only have minor uses since they are and will remain too rare ever to be available in sufficient quantity for mass production of a technology.
The technology metals are almost all rare metals, and they are almost all produced as byproducts of base or common metals.
The problem with the technology metals is that our supply of them, or more specifically our maximum rates of production of them, is critically dependent mostly upon our production of base metals. In the case of the rare earth metals, mined as a group, the key supply issue is the complex metallurgy of the separation of the individual rare earths from each other; for the case of lithium, a key issue is the length of time that primary concentration takes. The rare earths as a group are actually not rare, based on the admittedly arbitrary definition above, though individual rare earths certainly are.
The rare earths and lithium are today the subject of much discussion, because they have become the most visible technology metals.  The definition of a rare metal is somewhat fluid; a few of today’s rare metals may not always be so. Lithium, for example, is on the cusp of being struck from the list of rare metals, because of its use in electrical storage. But it has turned out that once a minor metal becomes a technology metal, it will never again be a minor metal.

Principle of The Levitation Melting

 




Levitation Metallurgical Equipment(Induction Cold Crucible Levitation Melting Furance)uses a Water Cooled Crucible(Cold Crucible) that does not react with the melt under vacuum or inert atmosphere in an induction coils, the electromagnetic field will levitate the liquid metal pool during melting,therefore no crucible contamination,no chemical cross contamination, also eliminate gas contamination.
